Claude Debussy: Cello Sonata in D minor
This piece was composed and published in 1915 at the outset of World War I—in many ways the "big bang" of the interweaving of the unsettling of the global social order into 20th century composition. This piece has all the vibrancy and energy of that optimistic turn-of-the-century moment, as well as an intimate lamentation of the new interconnected scale of violence that this era brought with it.
