About the event
Had it not been for the Nazis, Erich Wolfgang Korngold would have likely enjoyed a starry career as one of Europe’s leading composers for opera and concert stages. Instead, he was exiled from Austria to Los Angeles at the age of 40, where he became one of the most important film composers to ever live.
In 1944, he composed the score for Between Two Worlds, a film in which several people are killed in a London air raid and each awakens in Purgatory, aboard a strange ship delivering them either to heaven or hell. Paul Henreid starred as an exiled Austrian pianist-turned-soldier who endures a hand injury that ends his playing career—a character fusing (likely unintentionally) Korngold’s story with that of Paul Wittgenstein, an Austrian-American pianist who, after losing his right arm in World War I, commissioned works for piano left hand from the likes of Benjamin Britten, Richard Strauss,…
