Had it not been for the Nazis, Erich Wolfgang Korngold would likely have enjoyed a starry career as one of Europe's leading composers for the opera and concert stage. Instead, exiled from Austria to Los Angeles, he became one of the most important film composers to ever live. This program exists between two worlds—Vienna and California, concert hall and Hollywood studio—from Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and Bernard Herrmann's Echoes to the masterpiece Korngold wrote for the one-armed pianist Paul Wittgenstein, which gives this program its moving conclusion.​​​​​​​​
