"Rukuvhute" is the Shona word for umbilical cord. in Zimbabwe, a newborn's rukuvhute is buried at the family homestead as a symbol for where that child truly belongs. In his second Cultural Caravan residency, Zivanai Masango excavates his story and Zimbabwe's long struggle for freedom, two inseparable narratives bound together by a rich musical tradition, from the hand drumming he learned in junior school to the Chimurenga protest music of his mentor Thomas Mapfumo to the blend of mbira, electric instruments, and Afrojazz that has become his signature.​​​​​​​​
