About the event
Few works in the entire Western canon plumb the depths of heartbreak quite like Schubert's Winterreise. Written in 1827, the year before his death, it is a song cycle about someone walking alone into the winter cold after a failed love—but to call it that feels almost embarrassingly inadequate. Over the course of twenty-four songs, Schubert maps the experience of total estrangement from the world and everyone in it, of continuing to move through life when life has lost its meaning. What makes it so devastating is not the despair itself but the beauty through which it is expressed—melodies of such aching simplicity that they transcend intellect entirely and land with the utmost vulnerability.
This concert features a rare version of this legendary song cycle, arranged for voice and string trio—bringing even more color, texture, and interplay to this towering work. Michelle DeYoung—one of the world's preeminent mezzo-sopranos—will be joined…
