About the event
Few art forms balance as much weight and tension in as small a space as Argentine tango. Born in the working-class tenements and dance halls of 19th-century Buenos Aires where European immigrants, African descendants, and native Argentines converged, tango has always been about longing. Astor Piazzolla upended the tradition in the mid-20th century by weaving in jazz and classical music, scandalizing purists while expanding the form. Today tango exists as both a living social practice—danced in milongas from Buenos Aires to Tokyo—and a concert music highlighting its inherent complexity and sophistication, reminding us yet again that some of the most world's profound art forms began not in conservatories but on the street corner.
The Cultural Caravan presents this vibrant night led by multi-talented violinist MinTze Wu. Rounding out the ensemble are Tim Fox, piano; Josefina Mendez, voice; Evan Orman, bandoneón; and Eric Thorin, bass.
